Sweden's migration authority re-examines residency of Quran burner

Sweden’s authority has launched a re-examination of the residency permit of Iraqi Momika, who is behind Quran desecrations in Stockholm, causing a global uproar.

The man burnt a Quran outside of Stockholm’s mosque and also held a demonstration in front of the Iraqi embassy.

The migration agency said it is re-examining his immigration status after it received information from the Swedish authorities that have given reason to examine whether the man’s status in Sweden should be revoked.

"It is a measure that is taken when the Swedish agency receives such information" a spokesperson said, adding it was unable to comment further.

The man has a temporary residency permit in Sweden that expires in 2024.

Sweden has found itself in the international spotlight following provocations by different figures who burnt the holy Quran.

Prime Minister Kristersson’s government said it would examine if there was reason to change the Public Order Act to make it possible for police to stop Quran burnings.

Sweden does not have a law prohibiting the desecration of religious texts and characterizes the provocations as "freedom of speech."

The Swedish Security Service said that Sweden’s image among Muslim nations has deteriorated after the Quran-burning incidents and that it could face threats.

Minister Billstrom and representatives appeared before the Swedish parliament’s committee to discuss the Quran burning crisis at the request of the Social Democratic Party.

After the meeting, Billstrom told that the situation was "serious".
