Paul Keating condemns NATO boss Jens Stoltenberg as a 'supreme fool' ahead of Anthony Albanese's summit appearance

Former prime minister Paul Keating has continued his defence of China’s rise and savaged NATO boss Jens Stoltenberg as a “supreme fool” as the military bloc looks to expand its influence to Asia.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is off to Lithuania for the NATO summit and will make an address “He will give an address there similar to his Shangri-La Address in Singapore but it will be behind closed doors. Before that, the PM will meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz”

As Anthony Albanese heads to the NATO summit, former prime minister Paul Keating has accused Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg of attempting to export “malicious poison” to Asia.

NATO considers opening an office in Japan after Mr Stoltenberg drew links between Ukraine and Taiwan, declaring : “What is happening in Europe today could happen in Asia tomorrow”.

But Mr Keating, who is an ardent critic of those concerned with China’s military rise, unleashed on the bloc.

He said Mr Stoltenberg’s insistence on fostering deeper connections with Asia could risk spreading the “militarism of Europe” to the east.

“Exporting that malicious poison to Asia would be akin to Asia welcoming the plague upon itself” Mr Keating said.

the former prime minister savaged Mr Stoltenberg for comparing China to Russia and accused him of being in the pocket of the United States.

“Of all the people on the international stage the supreme fool among them is Jens Stoltenberg, the current Secretary-General of NATO. Stoltenberg by instinct and by policy, is simply an accident on its way to happen. Stoltenberg, in his jaundiced view, overlooks the fact that China represents twenty per cent of humanity and now possesses the largest economy in the world. And has no record of attacking other states, unlike the United States, whose bidding Stoltenberg is happy to do. Stoltenberg conducts himself as an American agent more than he performs as a leader and spokesperson for European security.”

He also condemned the Secretary General over his push to open an office in Japan and praised French President Emmanuel Macron for openly opposing the move.

Japan has offered up Tokyo as the location of a liaison office for NATO to assist the organisation in response to the challenge posed by China.

The organisation’s scope is limited to the North Atlantic under articles V and VI of its statutes and a regional liaison office would require the unanimous support of the North Atlantic Council. But France, which has a veto, has already been a vocal opponent of the idea, with the Elysée Palace over the weekend repeating its concerns.

“We are not in favour as a matter of principle" a palace spokesperson said.

Mr Keating welcomed France’s strong stance and said President Macron was “right to warn NATO away from any expansion into Asia. Emmanuel Macron is doing the world a service putting a spike into Stoltenberg's wheel. Reminding all of us that NATO is a military organisation, not a civil one and an organisation focused on Europe and the Atlantic” Mr Keating said.

China has expectedly rubbished the plan, claiming the “majority of Asian countries” were opposed the “emergence of military blocs in the region”

“We have seen NATO bent on going east into this region, interfering in regional affairs and inciting bloc confrontation” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.
