En résumé :

Bilbon, Thorin Ecu-de-Chêne, et le commando de nains rassemblés par Gandalf accompagnent le magicien dans la quête du trésor détenu par le terrible dragon Smaug. Alors qu'ils sont toujours poursuivis par des orques, Bilbon et ses compagnons se réfugient chez l'étrange Beorn avant de reprendre la route. Alors que Gandalf prend un chemin différent, Bilbon est de plus en plus attiré par l'anneau qu'il a dérobé à Gollum. C'est cet anneau qui lui permet de sauver ses amis des araignées géantes de la forêt noire.
