I have decided to summarize an article written by Adam Hayes which introduces the reader to what the stock market is all about. It explains how the need for entrepreneurs to access capital in order to make their company grow was filled with the creation of the stock market: the money used by the investors to buy shares is invested into the enterprise thus allowing whoever created it to have the funds needed to pay employees, equipment and the general expenses a businessman needs to pay for. The investors can also benefit from this trade since the shares they bought will gain value if the enterprise they invested in is doing well financially. On the opposite side, shares can also lose their value if the company is having a bad semester. The stock can be categorized in two separated types: common stock and preferred stock, what differs between those two is that common stock offers you the possibility to vote for who will be elected in the board of directors while you cannot do that with preferred stock, this board of directors that I mentioned earlier is a group of person with the responsibility to represent shareholders. The article also explains how to proceed if you want to buy shares: “For the average person to get access to these exchanges, they would need a stockbroker. This stockbroker acts as the middleman between the buyer and the seller.” This quotation helps to understand how important it is to have someone by your side if you are interested in investing in the stock market. Overall, the article is meant to help beginners who have heard about the stock market but never knew how it works. It concludes on the fact that there are risks when investing in shares but that those can be reduced if you invest wisely.
